You can be far away and still be at the Diwali table

You live abroad and your parents are in India. Diwali is on Sunday, 8 November 2026, according to Dekho Panchang. You want to send a Diwali gift to parents in India from abroad, and you want it to feel like you, not like a courier drop.

This guide is for the sender who lives outside India, not for the person receiving. It covers what to send to older parents, what the order needs, how to plan delivery so someone is home, and what to ask a seller first. For almonds, see our Kashmiri Mamra Badam page.

What should I send my parents in India for Diwali from abroad?

Send something that keeps, is easy to eat and needs no effort from them. Sealed dry fruits suit this well: badam (almond), akhrot (walnut) and pista (pistachio) last for weeks. Pick by your parents’ habits, not by what looks grand.

Mithai has to be eaten in a day or two. Flowers wilt before the call is over. A pack of nuts stays good, so it does not matter if the parcel lands a few days after the festival.

Think about the two people at home. Say your father eats a handful of nuts with his morning tea and your mother bakes for the neighbours. Then almonds and walnuts fit the kitchen they already have. Our guide to a Diwali dry fruit gift for family helps you choose by person.

One order can hold more than one nut, as long as each is a separate pack. Pick the pack size by how many people will share it, not by how big it looks on screen.

Which dry fruits suit older parents?

Almonds and walnuts suit most older parents, because they are easy to portion and keep well. Salted pistachios need a check first, as salt matters for some people. Soaking almonds makes them softer to chew. When in doubt, ask your parents or their doctor.

Here is how the three Valley Origin products fit older parents. Each comes in 250 g, 500 g, 1 kg and 2 kg packs.

  • Almonds. Mamra Badam is a small, oil-rich Kashmiri almond. It is firm, so some parents prefer it soaked and peeled. Our guide on soaking almonds explains how.
  • Walnut halves. Akhrot kernels are softer than almonds and easy to chew. See the Kashmiri Walnut Halves page.
  • Salted pistachios. The ingredients are pistachios and salt, in the shell. The Salted Pistachios page has the details.

The World Health Organization advises adults to eat less than 5 g of salt a day, which is a little under one teaspoon. A salted nut adds to that total. If your parents watch their blood pressure, or have diabetes, allergies or swallowing trouble, check with their doctor first. Unsalted nuts are the simpler choice for them.

Can I order from another country and have it delivered to an address in India?

Yes, if the gift goes to an address in India. Valley Origin does not say it ships outside India. You place the order from wherever you are, tick the gift option at checkout, and enter your parents’ Indian address as the delivery address.

Here is how the gift checkout works on the Valley Origin shop, checked on 30 October 2026.

  1. Tick “Send this as a gift”.
  2. Enter your name as the sender. Country and phone number are optional.
  3. Add an optional gift message.
  4. Enter the receiver’s name, mobile number and address in India.

Order updates go to you, the sender. You see the progress and can pass it on to your parents.

Payment is a separate question. Checkout takes payment by Cashfree, with UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets. We do not say that a card issued abroad will work. If you are unsure how to pay from where you live, ask on the gifting page before you start.

How do I plan delivery so someone is home to receive it?

Tell your parents the parcel is coming, give the courier a mobile number that will be answered, and add a landmark to the address. Then share the delivery window with them. A missed call is the usual cause of a failed delivery.

Start with the calendar. Today is Saturday, 31 October. Diwali is eight days away. Standard delivery is dispatched in 1 to 2 business days and delivered in 8 to 14 business days after that. Count that out and a Standard order will arrive after Diwali, not before.

Quick delivery has priority dispatch and takes 3 to 4 days, for Rs 200 extra per order. We do not promise that any order will arrive before Diwali. Our guide on last minute Diwali gift delivery works through the cut-offs, and our shipping policy has the full terms.

Now the receiver side. Parents may not recognise an unknown number. Say you live in Toronto and your mother does not pick up calls from numbers she does not know. Tell her to expect one. Business days also skip Sundays and public holidays, and the days around Diwali are holidays in many cities.

How do I add a message from me?

Use the optional gift message at checkout. Keep it to one or two lines in the language your parents speak at home. Say who it is from and what you wish them. The gift arrives with your words, not just a pack.

The message is where an NRI gift becomes personal. You cannot be at the puja, so the note has to carry some of you.

Here are three lines to copy and change.

  • “Happy Diwali, Mummy and Papa. This is a small taste from us. We will call you on the evening of Diwali.”
  • “Wishing you a bright Diwali. We are with you in every diya you light.”
  • “Late, but with love. Your Diwali gift is here. Save a handful for the grandkids’ next call.”

Keep it plain. A short message that sounds like you reads better than a poem. Our guide on sending a dry fruit gift to another city has more tips on addresses and receiver details.

What if the gift arrives after Diwali?

Call or video-call on Diwali, and tell them the gift is on its way. A gift that follows the festival is a second reason to speak. Dry fruits keep, so a few days of delay do not spoil them.

Plan for this outcome from the start, because it is the likeliest one for an order placed this close to the festival. Do not tell your parents it will come “on Diwali”. Say it is coming and give a rough window.

Here is a simple plan:

  1. Order today. The date is the part you control.
  2. Tell them it is coming. A message now, a call on Diwali evening.
  3. Share the delivery update. You get the order updates, so forward them.
  4. Ask them to open it soon. Once opened, move the nuts to an airtight jar.

If the date matters a lot, ask about Quick delivery. If it does not, Standard is fine, and a gift after the rush often gets noticed more.

What should I ask a seller before I order for my parents?

Ask five things: does the address in India get delivery, what is the dispatch and delivery window, who gets order updates, how can I pay from abroad, and what is the packing like. If the seller cannot answer, wait.

You cannot walk into a shop and look. So your questions have to do that job.

  1. Does it deliver to my parents’ PIN code? Ask before you pay, not after.
  2. What are the dispatch and delivery windows? Ask for both. They are different things.
  3. Who receives the order updates? For gifts, it should be you.
  4. How do I pay from where I live? Do not assume a foreign card works. Ask the seller to confirm.
  5. How is it packed, and what is in the pack? Look for sealed packs with the weight printed.

Our guide to how to choose a dry fruit gift box has a longer checklist. Do not trust a page that makes big promises about speed without giving windows.

What mistakes should NRI senders avoid?

Do not promise a date you cannot control, do not guess the address, and do not assume your card works. Each mistake costs days, and each is easy to fix with a call to your parents and a question to the seller.

  1. Promising “it will reach you on Diwali”. If it does not, you look worse than if you had said nothing. Say “it is on its way”.
  2. A short address. Add the flat number, a landmark and the PIN code. Confirm all three with your parents.
  3. A phone number nobody answers. Use the number of the person who will be home, and warn them.
  4. Assuming payment will work. Ask first. A failed payment on the last day costs more time than any delivery option saves.
  5. Choosing salt without asking. Check with your parents, or their doctor, before you send a salted nut.

How does Valley Origin handle gifting orders?

Any shop order can be sent as a gift at checkout, with the receiver’s address in India. Bulk, corporate and festive gifting orders go through an enquiry on the gifting page. Send quantity, pack size, date needed and delivery city.

Valley Origin is a family business that began in Kashmir in 1975 and sells direct from growers, with no middlemen. Ordinary shop orders ship across India, free above Rs 999 on Standard delivery.

Replies to enquiries come within 1 to 2 business days, by WhatsApp on +91 95412 92447 or email at hello@valleyorigin.in. If you are unsure whether your order and payment will work from abroad, ask on the gifting page. Nothing here promises delivery before Diwali.

Frequently asked questions about sending Diwali gifts to parents in India from abroad

Does Valley Origin ship outside India?

No, it does not say it ships outside India. The receiver’s address must be in India. You can place the order from abroad as the sender, and the gift goes to your parents’ address in India.

Order updates go to you. If you are unsure about anything, ask on the gifting page.

Will my foreign card work at checkout?

We cannot promise that. Checkout takes payment by Cashfree, with UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets, but we do not say that a card issued abroad will work. Ask on the gifting page before you order.

A short question beforehand is better than a failed payment on the last day.

Will the gift arrive before Diwali?

It is not promised. Standard delivery takes 8 to 14 business days after 1 to 2 days of dispatch, so it will arrive after 8 November. Quick delivery takes 3 to 4 days and costs Rs 200 extra, but is not guaranteed either.

Tell your parents it is on its way, and call them on the day.

Can I put my phone number and country on the order?

Yes. At the gift checkout you enter your name, and your country and phone number are optional. You also enter the receiver’s name, mobile number and address in India. Order updates go to you.

Give the receiver’s mobile number carefully, because it is the one the courier will call.

Is it fine to send a gift after the festival?

Yes. Dry fruits keep well, so a gift that arrives a few days after Diwali is still welcome, especially with a message that it is on its way. For many parents, a second call matters more than the date.

Add a line in the gift message, and tell them to expect it.

Be at the table with a call and a parcel on its way

Distance changes how you give, not whether you give. Order for an address in India, put your parents’ mobile number and a landmark on the order, write a message that sounds like you, and call them on Diwali evening. If the parcel lands a few days later, it gives you one more reason to talk.

For almonds, see the Kashmiri Mamra Badam page for current prices and pack sizes. If you are unsure about payment from abroad, or you are sending to more than one address, send an enquiry on our gifting page.
